Thornhill is a suburban community in the Regional Municipality of York. It is split between the cities of Vaughan and Markham, lying along the north border of Toronto, centred on Yonge Street.

The growth and development of Thornhill is directly related to:
  • the development of Yonge Street as a transportation route
  • the Don River system running through the village
  • Thornhill’s proximity to Toronto

Schools

Thornhill contains a large variety of public and private schools for children of all ages. the most notable schools being St. Elizabeth Catholic High School and Westmount Collegiate Institute. Both have regional arts programs that specialize in visual arts, drama, music, and dance.

Thornhill has YRT bus routes that connect it to the rest of Vaughan and Toronto.

History

Thornhill first started as a "Police Village" connected to the origin of  Yonge Street developed as a military road by the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe. The use of Yonge Street as a major transportation group contributed to the rapid growth Thornhill faced as a growing residential community.
