Downsview is one of the largest neighbourhoods in Toronto and is home to the 572-acre Downsview Park, Canada’s only urban national park. Since its beginning in 2006, a development project of the area has been in place and will continue over the next few decades. It aims to produce 5 entirely new Toronto neighbourhoods that blend commercial, residential, educational, institutional, and parkland, making it one of the most extensive redevelopment projects that the city has ever seen. The area is known for Yorkdale Shopping Centre, the Allen Expressway, and the former Canadian Forces Base (CFB Toronto). Downsview Park area is a business/industrial hub in the centre of the city and also hosts various year-round programs for all ages.
The Downsview Arena offers organized hockey league programs as well as leisure skating to the public. There is also a bowling green, a public library, and various recreational parks (Downsview Park being the largest example) which offer tennis courts, children’s playgrounds, baseball diamonds, etc. to Downsview residents. Both the Yorkdale Mall and the North York Sheridan Malls include large movie theatres.
Transportation and Walk Score
There are various bus routes on Dufferin, Jane, and Keele streets that connect Downsview residents to the Bloor-Danforth subway line, as well as busses along Lawrence, Wilson, and Sheppard Avenues that connect to the Yonge-University-Spadina line. Overall, this area is greatly served by the TTC. Motorists can access the downtown core via Bathurst street and Highway 401 very quickly from anywhere in the neighbourhood.
