Parks & Recreation

Mississauga has an abundance of parks that offer a wide variety of activities. Lakefront Promenade Park, for example, is home to trails, beach volleyball courts, picnic areas, and waterfront access which includes a marina, boardwalk, and splashpad. Kariya Park is a Japanese-inspired garden which offers peaceful walkways and a duck pond, making it a unique and truly serene green space. Erindale Park offers a picnic area equipped with grills, several trails, a tobogganing hill, a playground, and much more. Many of the parks in Mississauga boast stunning lake views (the Waterfront Trail runs 650 kilometers long) and a plethora of activities that appeal to all sorts of individuals. Mississauga is known as Ontario's shopping capital, boasting a variety of picturesque shops lining small village-style streets, Square One shopping mall, and close proximity to Toronto's downtown shopping scene. The harbour is an area for recreational boating as well as a frequently used event space for festivals and community gatherings.

History

“Mississauga” translates as meaning “River of the North of Many Mouths”. Mississauga can trace its roots back to the early 1600s, where French traders encountered Native peoples, the Mississaugas, around the North Shore of Lake Huron. The Mississaugas were an Ojibwa group, and by the early 1700s had settled in the area around the Etobicoke Creek, Credit River and Burlington Bay. In 1805, representatives for the British Crown and the Native Mississaugas signed a treaty referred to as the “Mississauga Purchase”. the Crown acquired over 74,000 acres of land excluding a 1 mile strip on each side of the Credit River from the waterfront to the base line (modern Eglinton Avenue). This tract of land surveyed in 1806 was named Toronto Township, and opened up the area for settlement. Gradually settlers moved into the area, and over time small settlements became established. These settlements developed into the villages of Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Malton, Meadowvale Village, Port Credit and Streetsville. The Town of Mississauga was created in 1968, and the City of Mississauga was incorporated in 1974, through the amalgamation of the Town of Mississauga and the villages of Port Credit and Streetsville, together with portions of the townships of Toronto Gore and Trafalgar. Mississauga has grown to be Canada’s sixth largest city.

City Centre

Transit

City Centre offers multiple different transit options for residents. Parks Recreation

Parks & Recreation

Due to the metropolitan feel of the City Centre, there are limited park areas. What the neighbourhood lacks in green space, it makes up for in the vast selection of recreation activities. Celebration Square is an outdoor square with activities all year round, such as skating during the winter season. The Living Arts Centre, an arts and culture facility  offers painting workshops  for all ages and has a theatre for performances. Square One shopping Centre offers the perfect retail shopping experience and Square One Cineplex is a go to movie destination.

History

Square One Shopping Centre opened in 1973,  surrounded by farm fields with some residential housing. In 1987 the Mississauga Civic Centre was opened and became the local seat of government for the growing City of Mississauga. The Duke and Duchess of York were part of the opening ceremonies for the new civic centre. The Duke’s visit is commemorated in the street name Duke of York Blvd. that runs through the City Centre neighbourhood. Much of the residential development of this neighbourhood has occurred recently with Daniels' multi-award winning Mississauga City Centre, a planned neighbourhood that features a variety of amenities in a neighbourhood where residents can live, work and play.
